I know there is always more to learn about hunting, game management and game animals. I look for any opportunity to do so, especially since there is little comparison to the education that I hope to receive from some true professionals in their respective fields. I know my current limits with various firearms and I keep my shots within distances where I feel confident. However, I would love to know how much better I could be with the right instruction. Additionally, one cannot overstate the importance of a deeper understanding of game management and collaboration with local stakeholders to make sure that sportsman keep the big picture in mind and not focus on selfish, near-term achievement.

A class about effective shooting fundamentals and hunter ethics from shooting instructors, landowners, and game wardens is essential for hunters. Shooting instructors can provide expert guidance on firearm safety, proper technique, and shot placement, improving a hunter’s accuracy and reducing the risk of injuring themselves or others. Landowners and game wardens can offer valuable insights into local hunting laws, regulations, and conservation practices, ensuring that hunters are knowledgeable and respectful of the environment. This combination of practical skills and ethical considerations can help hunters become more responsible members of the hunting community, protecting the sustainability of wildlife populations and ensuring safe, enjoyable hunting experiences for years to come.
As a lifelong hunter and 2020 graduate of the Montana Master Hunter program, I’ve come to have a greater understanding of the importance of the relationship between hunters and landowners especially in Montana. A hunter needs to bring to the field a great deal of competence behind the weapon he/she chooses to hunt with; however, accuracy and precision with a rifle are only a fraction of what makes an ethical hunter. I think the subjects covered in this course will help to elevate my skills as a shooter, knowledge of conservation and the ethical considerations of hunting as a partner in the stewardship of the lands our game animals inhabit. It is hard to sum up my views on the class topics in about 100 words, but I will try to condense them.
Effective shooting is important to me as a hunter because I want to make the cleanest, quickest, most humane kill possible. It is also important to me to know the effective range of my firearm, so as not to make a poor shot, risking missing, or worse yet, wounding and potentially losing an animal.
Being an ethical hunter is important to me for many reasons. I feel we owe it to not only the animal we are hunting, but also the land, the landowner, the general public and ourselves make the best ethical choices we can and stick to our strong ethical codes. We as hunters should be elevating ourselves above the law, not going for the bare minimum of what is “legal”. Nonhunters and antihunters watch hunter’s behavior in the field and on social media and I never want to give anyone a reason to show that I have done something wrong to jeopardize the future of hunting. Reading and understanding rules and regulations, engaging with landowners and learning from them, keeping in contact with biologists and game wardens all attribute to a better understanding of what is expected from me as a hunter.
Thank you very much for your consideration for the Next Level Bitterroot Hunter Camp. I am always excited to find new ways to advance my learning as a hunter.
I would like to enter the class to take my hunting skills to the next level.
